Death Could Not Hold Him

Yet another writing of mine inspired by John Mark McMillan.

Death Could Not Hold Him
28 March 2011

“On Friday a thief, on Sunday a king
Laid down in grief, but awoke with the keys
To Hell on that day, firstborn of the slain
The man, Jesus Christ, laid Death in His grave”
-- John Mark McMillan

Death could not hold Him.
        The breath had to come in,
His life in the wind,
Left in the tomb,
A resurrection womb:
Death could not hold Him.
        It should not think that
It had the power;
        It would not be victorious,
        In the Victor’s hour:
Death could not hold Him.
        Though thirty pieces sold Him,
        Receipt with a kiss;
        “You’ll deny Me,” He insisted,
        As the rest self-dismisséd.
Death could not hold Him,
        Who rose, conquering sin,
Breaking the grave’s seal;
Death wound up serving
The Victor again:
